June/ JulyOne of Jungle's unsung heroes, Michael West began his career as Rebel MC with Brit rappers Double Trouble and the pop hit Street Tuff which went top 10 in the UK and is still hailed as an early dance classic. In 1991 he released his Black Meaning Good album which featured reggae legends and dancehall stars such as Barrington Levy, Tenor Fly and Dennis Brown crooning and toasting on top of reggae / breakbeat riddims. The X-Project label followed shortly after and as Conquering Lion, West released a series of underground Jungle tracks featuring vocals from Supercat, Top Cat and old sparring partner Tenor Fly. Conquering Lion's massive "Code Red" (1994) caught the attention of 4th & Broadway who re-released the track in 1995 and has gone on to be a much loved Jungle anthem. From here on, Rebel continued to churn out Jungle classics at an alarming rate, with some of the most successful being Champion DJ (Feat. Top Cat), Junglist (Feat. Peter Bouncer) and Police In Helicopter (Feat. John Holt).Rebel MC and the Congo Natty label have a huge following around the world in countries as far flung as Japan, Germany, France, Canada and the U.S.A. and a number of tribute sites have popped up on the internet declaring their love and admiration for the Congo Natty sound. This album is a retrospective of Rebels career, starting from his earliest hits recorded with Double Trouble, through to his first rave classics Wickedest Sound and Tribal Base to tracks taken from his solo albums such as Humanity and Richer Getting Richer and features a number of Reggae greats such as Dennis Brown, Barrington Levi and Tenor Fly.
